Alpo dog treats have been recalled due to potential contamination with Salmonella and Listeria.

The recall was announced by the manufacturer, Nestle Purina PetCare, in response to consumer complaints about their pets falling ill after consuming the treats.

The recalled products include Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy and Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy with Chicken.

Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to discard them immediately.

Purina Recalls

Purina had to recall their Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food due to potential contamination with melamine.

This recall was a part of a larger pet food scare in the U.S. that affected many brands, including Purina's own Alpo brand.

The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities in the U.S.

Purina's products are safe, according to company officials in Canada, who are telling customers that their products are safe.

Consumers were urged to stop feeding their dogs Alpo Prime Cuts products with specific date codes and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet.

The contaminated wheat gluten was provided by the same company that supplied Menu Foods, a Canadian company that also recalled its products due to the same issue.

In total, 53 brands of dog food and 42 brands of cat food were affected by the recall across North America.

Product Recall History

In March 2007, a major recall of Alpo dog food was issued due to potential melamine contamination. Over 400,000 cases of Alpo were removed from the market.

The recall affected a wide range of Alpo products, including Alpo Prime Cuts canned dog food. The contaminated products had a "best by" date of Feb 1, 2009, and plant code 1159.

The melamine contamination was linked to wheat gluten purchased from suppliers in China. This was a common factor in many of the pet food recalls at the time.

The FDA reported the recall on March 30, 2007, and updated the list of recalls on May 30, 2007.

The recalled products included 13.2 oz., 22 oz., and variety packs of Alpo canned dog food with a "best by" date of Feb. 1, 2009, and plant code 1159.
