Apollo graduated from the NYPD Canine Special Operations Division in 1994 and was one of the first dogs to learn search and rescue. He passed Type-II training in Florida in 1997 and Type-I in Indianapolis in 1999.

Apollo and his handler Peter Davis were a dynamic duo, working together to save lives in the Dominican Republic after a hurricane. Apollo received the Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross, for his tireless courage in the service of humanity during the search and rescue operations at the World Trade Center site.

Apollo, the New Canaan Police Department's K9 dog, is retiring after 10 years of service. He was a German Shepherd from Washington state who joined the department in 2015.
