The Caucasian Shepherd attack has brought attention to the breed's safety concerns. This breed is known for its strong protective instincts and can be wary of strangers.

Caucasian Shepherds are large dogs, typically weighing between 80-140 pounds and standing 26-32 inches tall at the shoulder. They have a thick coat that can be white, black, or various shades of brown.

Their protective nature can sometimes lead to attacks on people, especially if they feel threatened or if they're not properly socialized. In some cases, this can result in serious injuries or even fatalities.

The breed's strong prey drive and high energy levels also contribute to their potential for aggression, especially if they're not provided with adequate exercise and mental stimulation.

Incident Details

The Caucasian Shepherd is a powerful breed, capable of weighing up to 100 kilograms and growing up to 70cm in height.

They were originally bred as livestock guardian dogs in the Caucasus Mountains in Eurasia to defend sheep from wolves and bears.

The breed is also known as a Caucasian Ovcharka or Russian Bear Dog.

In two separate incidents, Caucasian Shepherds attacked people, causing injuries and prompting court action.

A youth in Keighley was ordered to pay £700 compensation to the victims and referred to the Bradford Youth Offender Panel after his two dogs, a 10-year-old male and a three-year-old female, attacked three people in the street.

A police officer in Glasgow was bitten on the testicles by a Caucasian Shepherd, leading to the dog's owner being fined £270.

Keighley Youth Attack

In Keighley, a youth's two Caucasian Ovcharkas attacked three people in the street last year.

The dogs, one a 10-year-old male and the other a three-year-old female, were dangerously out of control on two separate occasions.

The male Caucasian Ovcharka attacked a man in Lawkholme Lane on March 4, and the female attacked a man and a woman in Sladen Street on March 6.

The youth was referred to the Bradford Youth Offender Panel for a 12-month contract.

He was ordered to pay £700 compensation to the victims, with £300 going to the two men and £100 to the woman.

The youth's parents will have to pay the compensation for him.

The dogs must be kept in a secure place they cannot escape from when not in public.

They must be walked individually at all times, never with each other, and must be neutered.

The youth was told that if he doesn't obey these restrictions, the dogs will be destroyed.

A police expert witness said that if these measures are put in place, the dogs do not represent a danger to the public.

These dogs are generally wary of outsiders, which can lead to conflicts if they're not socialized properly. Without proper training and socialization, a Caucasian Shepherd Dog can become overly defensive and even attack.

The breed's independence and strong will can make them challenging to manage for inexperienced dog owners. However, with the right training and care, they can thrive as loving and loyal family pets.
