If you live in Genesee County and own a dog, you need to get a dog license. The license is required by law and helps ensure your dog's safety and well-being.

The cost of a dog license in Genesee County varies depending on the age of your dog. For dogs that are spayed or neutered, the license fee is $5, while for unaltered dogs, the fee is $15.

You can obtain a dog license from the Genesee County Treasurer's office or from a participating veterinarian.

Getting a License

You can obtain a 2024 Genesee County Dog License from the Fenton Township Office now through September 14, 2024.

If you're getting a new license, you'll need to provide proof of age, date of current rabies shot, and proof of spaying/neutering (if applicable) to a licensing office within 30 days.

If you're getting a new license at the September deadline, the rabies vaccine proof must be from August 2024 or September 2024.

The Fenton Township office can only process the 1-year dog license; if you want the 3-year license, you'll need to go through the Genesee County Treasurer's Office.

If your dog has already registered in the past, the county will send a filled-out form to you in the mail. Our office will have blank forms available. Please bring prepared forms if possible.

You can print a blank form from the link below to mail to the Genesee County Treasurer's Office if you want to purchase a 3-year license or are outside the purchase window for the Fenton Township Office.

Note: All dogs are required by state law to be licensed by the age of four (4) months.

Why Get a License?

Getting a license for your dog is more than just a formality. It proves your pup is up-to-date on their rabies vaccine.

This is super important for both your dog and the neighborhood squirrels. If your dog isn't vaccinated, they can contract rabies and potentially spread it to other animals.

The license also helps reunite your dog with you if they ever get lost. Just think about it, if your dog decides to chase a butterfly a little too far, the license will make it easier for you to get them back.

The fees from licenses help fund Genesee County's animal control department, which is basically the Paw Patrol in real life. They work hard to keep our community safe and healthy.

Fees and Deadlines

In Genesee County, the licensing schedule is based on when your dog's rabies vaccine is due.

You'll receive a pre-printed application 30 days before the expiration of your dog's rabies vaccine, giving you a window of time to purchase a new license.

The delinquent license fee is $50 for one year, or $100 for three years, and delinquent licenses are only available through Animal Control.

You'll need to purchase a license within the month before, the month of, and the month after the vaccine expiration to avoid this fee.

A spayed/neutered pet will cost $10 for one year, and $25 for three years, while an unspayed/unneutered pet will cost $30 for one year, and $80 for three years.
