The KCPD K9 Unit is a highly skilled and dedicated team that serves and sacrifices for the community they protect. The unit is comprised of 14 handlers and 14 dogs, who work tirelessly to keep the public safe.

The KCPD K-9 unit has two Belgian Malinois canines, Gaviao and Flick. They are both single-purpose explosives detection canines.

Gaviao is a 7-year-old male from Brazil, while Flick is a 3-year-old female from the Netherlands. Both canines received their initial training at different kennels, Gaviao at Vohn Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana, and Flick at Houston K-9 Academy in Houston, Texas.

Gaviao joined the department in February 2017, whereas Flick joined in April 2022. Both canines are certified in explosives detection yearly by the National Police Canine Association.

The KCPD K9 Unit has faced its share of challenges, including tragic incidents.

In 2014, Officer Dennis Eichelberger's K9, K9 Rocco, was shot and killed during a training exercise.

The incident was a devastating loss for the KCPD K9 Unit and the community.

Officer James Muhlbauer was a 20-year veteran of KCPD, serving his entire career in patrol, including the last three years in the K-9 Unit.

He was married and a father, and his family lived with his K-9 partner, Champ, a 3-year-old Dutch Shepherd who joined KCPD a year ago.

Muhlbauer was transported to a hospital after the crash, where doctors treated him for life-threatening injuries, but were unable to save him.

He died at the hospital, and his death marks the first KCPD officer to die in the line of duty since May of 2001.
