Lampo's travels took him to different parts of the country, and he even became a familiar figure on the Rome-Genoa Express.

He would often ride the train from Livorno, which is about 70 kilometers north of Campiglia, to other destinations.

One of the most remarkable things about Lampo's travels was his ability to decipher train schedules and destinations.

Lampo's adventures eventually came to an end in 1961, when he tragically died, possibly struck by a train.

Train travel in Italy is a unique experience, especially if you're traveling with a furry friend. In 1953, a dog named Lampo became a regular passenger on the train from Campiglia to Piombino.

The train station at Campiglia is a special place for Lampo, as it's where he was first spotted getting off a freight train. He made himself right at home there, even earning the affection of the ticket agent, Elvio Barlettani.

Lampo's daily train journey was quite remarkable, as he would accompany Elvio on the train to Piombino and then return to Campiglia on his own. He even had a special purpose - to accompany Elvio's daughter to school.

Travelers from all over came to Campiglia just to catch a glimpse of the "traveling dog", as he was affectionately known in the newspapers. You can still visit the train station today and see the spot where Lampo would drink from the water fountain.

Lampo's legacy lives on through a monument at the Campiglia Marittima railway station, inaugurated by railway workers and the American magazine This Week.

The stationmaster, Elvio Barlettani, wrote a book about Lampo called Lampo, the Traveling Dog, which was published by Garzanti and became a bestseller with 15 editions until 2009.

Translated into multiple languages, Lampo's story has been enjoyed by readers worldwide, including English, French, German, Japanese, and Bengali speakers.

In 1967, the Polish writer Roman Pisarski fictionalized Lampo's story in a short story that has become a standard school reading in Poland.
