Lex's adoption story is a heartwarming reminder that every dog deserves a second chance at a happy life.
He was just a pup, living in a shelter, waiting for someone to give him a loving home. Lex was only 6 months old when he was adopted by his forever family.
His family soon discovered that Lex had a lot of energy and needed regular exercise to keep him happy and healthy. They took him on long walks and played fetch with him in the park.

Lex's Story
Lex was a small tan mixed breed who was extremely timid and shy when he first came into care.
He had a foxtail embedded deep in his ear and was underweight, which made him clearly in pain. Our medical staff was able to remove the foxtail and start him on antibiotics to counteract any infection.
Lex was paired with an amazing foster family who had an equally amazing dog, Marcel. Marcel was a patient and sweet giant who helped Lex build his confidence.
Just three weeks later, Lex was a different dog - he was happy, bouncy, and confident, especially with Marcel by his side.
Adoption
Lex's story took a remarkable turn with his adoption. Lee's parents, Jerome and Rachel Lee, appealed to the military to adopt Lex.
Congressman Walter B. Jones of North Carolina's 3rd congressional district helped the Lee family with the release and adoption of Lex. He was a key figure in making Lex's adoption a reality.
A special provision in the law allowed for the early retirement of dogs under certain situations, which was enacted to allow a wounded Air Force dog handler to adopt her partner before retirement in 2005. This provision paved the way for Lex's adoption.
Lex was released from five years of active service and turned over to the Lee family on December 21, 2007. This was a momentous occasion that received national media attention.
At the time of his adoption, Lex was 8 years old. He had already served his country with distinction and was ready to start a new chapter in his life.
The Lee family was overjoyed to welcome Lex into their home and began to make arrangements for his care.
