The prolonged fighting in the Meuse-Argonne was the final American campaign of World War I, where Rags and Donovan played a pivotal role.

Rags suffered serious injuries in a mustard gas attack, including leg injuries and damage to one eye and one ear.

Despite his injuries, Rags eventually recovered and was able to get around.

Jimmy Donovan, however, was more severely wounded and was sent back to Fort Sheridan in Chicago for further medical care.

Rags was smuggled onto the ship taking Donovan back to the U.S. and was eventually allowed to visit him in the hospital ward at Fort Sheridan.

Donovan never fully recovered from his injuries and sadly passed away in the hospital in 1919.
