Finding a forever home for a Shiba Inu can be a rewarding experience for both the dog and the adopter. Shiba Inus are known for their loyal and affectionate nature, making them a great companion for many families.

Many Shiba Inus end up in shelters due to owner surrender, with some shelters reporting that up to 75% of their Shiba Inu population is made up of dogs that were surrendered by their owners.

With the right care and attention, Shiba Inus can thrive in a variety of living situations, from apartments to houses with yards. They require regular exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behavior.

Meet Our Rescued Shiba Inus

We've had the privilege of rescuing many Shiba Inus in need, and each one has a unique story to tell. 43 Shiba Inus were rescued from a former commercial breeder in Douglas County, Missouri, where they were severely emaciated and suffering from various injuries and health conditions.

These dogs are currently receiving emergency veterinary treatment and health evaluations at the Humane Society of Missouri's headquarters. All of the animals are receiving the care they need to fully recover and find loving forever homes.

Here are some of the rescued Shiba Inus' stories:

Kobi (Aka Bucky)

Kobi, also known as Bucky, has finally gotten the photo he deserved with our new camera. He's doing very well and seems to love his new home, even defending it from time to time.

Kobi still has some signs of a tumultuous childhood, but he's trusting more and fearing less with each passing day. His antics, like the Shiba 500, bring a lot of joy to his family.

One of Kobi's favorite times of the day is early morning when he jumps up on the bed and demands "doggie love". These moments are a reminder that they made the right decision in adopting him.

Kobi has made a friend in a rescue Greyhound down the road, but he's not too fond of the white German Shepherd next door. He also keeps a close eye on any cats that dare to cross the property line.

Pam takes Kobi for walks 2 to 3 times a day, and the community loves him for it. People often comment on how quiet he is, how much he looks like a fox, and what he'll be like when he grows up.

Faith

Faith has definitely integrated herself into our family and is doing very well. She's still asking permission to pet her most of the time, but seems to require less asking.

We're still working on getting her to come inside on her own, but there are times when she still seems spooked. Those times seem to be occurring less often, though.

Faith is content to relax in one place, pacing less in the house. She's still running circles in the backyard, but we're making sure not to let her do that for too long at a time.

We've noticed that Faith has a favorite rawhide toy, and she's been enjoying it since Christmas. She's also been enjoying being dressed up, as evidenced by a recent photo.

Faith's tail is always up when she's happy, and we've captured a photo of her in this state. It's a great sign that she's happy and content in her new home.

Saki

Saki is one of the lucky Shiba Inus who got a second chance at life thanks to the Humane Society of Missouri's (HSMO) rescue efforts. She was formally known as Sakura and was part of the 43 Shiba Inus rescued from a former commercial breeder in Douglas County, Missouri.

Saki has settled into her new home in York, Pennsylvania, and is loving the Spring weather, with a fenced yard full of flowers and foliage to explore. She's gained weight, now weighing 22 pounds, and has mastered sitting and shaking.

Saki's new family is grateful for the care and support provided by the HSMO, and they're happy to have her as a special part of their family. They're just one of many families who have been touched by the HSMO's rescue efforts, and their story is a testament to the power of kindness and compassion.

Here are some key facts about Saki's rescue and recovery:

If you'd like to help support Saki and the other rescued Shiba Inus, you can donate blankets, newspapers, dog toys, or dog beds to make their recovery more comfortable. You can also consider adopting one of these amazing dogs once they're ready for their forever homes.

Earl

Earl was a rescue from a puppy mill, and he was almost 8 years old when he was adopted. He had never been potty trained and was scared of noises like the TV.

Earl's new owners drove two days to South Padre, TX to get married, and then another three days to Ohio to pick him up. They were getting ready to drive two days in the opposite direction, but it was worth it to bring Earl home.

Earl started out rough around the edges, but he has shaped up to be the perfect member of his family. He loves attention, loves to play, but also loves to be a lazy dog.
