World's Oldest Dog

Meet Spike, the world's oldest living dog, a 23-year-old chihuahua mix from Ohio.

Spike was born in November 1999 and achieved canine bragging rights on December 7, 2022, with a certificate proving he was "at least 23 years and 7 days old" at the date of verification.

Rita Kimball, Spike's owner, found him abandoned in the parking lot of a grocery store in 2009, where he had been left for three days.

Spike weighed just 12.9 pounds and had been shaved up his back with blood stains around his neck from a chain or rope.

He was taken home to Rita's farm, where he jumped right in and sat on the seat, as if he knew where he was going.

Spike's name was inspired by the big, aggressive dog from the "Tom and Jerry" cartoons, despite being small and friendly himself.

He had "survived multiple attacks" from other animals and "come back stronger each time", according to the GWR statement.

Spike's owner, Rita Kimball, said he was nearly blind and hard of hearing, but still preferred spending time with people he knew and visiting the animals on her farm.
