The Grey Dog
The Grey Dog is a down-to-earth spot that's been around since 1996.
It was started by two brothers, and it's a solidly American menu of comfort food that's perfect for breakfast, brunch, or lunch.
You can expect to find wholesome options like pancakes, omelets, and avocado toast, as well as sandwiches and salads.
Their food is not cheap, but it's healthy-ish, even if it's not low-fat.
I'd say at least 99% of the staff are hardcore vegans, but don't let that stop you from trying their delicious chicken on sourdough with fresh mozz, pesto, and sundried tomato.
There are apparently four of these places around NYC, and they all follow the same theme of comfort and untrendiness.
You might not find it sleek or modern, but it's a great place to escape the trendiness of the city and feel comfortable for a day.
Grey Dog Closes Flagship Shop
The Grey Dog's flagship West Village shop is closing its doors tomorrow due to a long-standing rent dispute with the landlord.
The shop has been a neighborhood fixture on Carmine Street since 1996, but the brothers who own it, David Ethan and Peter Adrian, have been locked in a dispute with their landlord, Janusz Sendowski of Sarsen Realty, for the last seven years.
The brothers claim the landlord is trying to collect over $100,000 in property taxes retroactive to the beginning of the lease, which was not included in the original agreement.
Regulars are mourning the loss of the beloved shop, with one community member saying "There really isn’t any other place like it in the neighborhood."
The Grey Dog is actually opening a new location on Mulberry Street near Chinatown this Friday, October 21st, so if you're a fan of the shop, you'll still be able to get your fix.
However, it won't be the same as visiting the original shop, as one regular noted "it won't be the same: that’s probably not going to happen very often."
