If you're looking for a loyal companion, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is an excellent choice. This breed is known for its distinctive ridge of hair running along its back in the opposite direction of its coat.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are originally from Africa, bred to hunt lions and other large game. Their athletic build and strong instinct to chase make them a great fit for active families.

In California, you'll find several reputable breeders who specialize in raising healthy, well-socialized puppies. Look for breeders who prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs, as well as their temperament and trainability.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Breeders

Cavallo Creek Ridgebacks is a top-notch breeder located in central California, just 30 miles north of Houston. They have a well-established breeding program that employs elite and standard procedures to ensure the best possible litters.

The breeder has a variety of stud dogs available for breeding, and occasionally imports males from abroad to boost the genetic pool of their dogs. For instance, in 2013, they imported male dogs from South Africa to enhance their breeding program.

Kohana Rhodesian Ridgebacks, on the other hand, is a breeder situated in Southern California, owned and run by the Cradle family. They are strongly committed to breeding healthy dogs with a good bloodline and have produced championship dogs with excellent conformation and wonderful temperaments.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a majestic breed with a rich history. Developed in the 16th century, they were bred to hunt lions and other large game in Southern Africa.

Their distinctive ridge of hair runs along their back, from the base of the skull to the tail, and is a result of their unique genetic makeup. This ridge is one of the breed's most recognizable features.

Originating from the Shona people's dogs, the Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed to be a skilled hunter and guardian. They were highly valued for their intelligence, athleticism, and loyalty.

Their short, smooth coats require minimal grooming, making them a great choice for busy owners. Regular nail trimming and ear cleaning are all that's needed to keep them looking their best.

In terms of size, Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a medium to large breed, with males weighing between 70-90 pounds and standing 24-27 inches tall at the shoulder. Females are slightly smaller, weighing between 50-70 pounds and standing 22-25 inches tall.

With proper training and socialization, Rhodesian Ridgebacks can make wonderful family pets, but they do require consistent exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behavior.

The Buying Process

The Buying Process is a thoughtful and intentional experience at Zolani Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

I don't have an upcoming litter planned, so I'm not keeping a waitlist at this time.

If you're interested in finding a puppy, I encourage you to check out my Litters page for more information.

As a relatively new breeder, I'm still refining the process of buying a puppy from me.

Zolani RR's first litter was born in April 2020, just a few weeks after the pandemic lockdown began.

I spoke to interested families before the litter was born and placed six of eight puppies in California.

Long-distance site visits and puppy visits via Zoom and FaceTime were the norm back then.

Now that pandemic guidelines have relaxed, families can visit the puppies in person.

As a member of the national club, RRCUS, and the Colorado Rhodesian Ridgeback Club, I follow the Code of Ethics for both clubs.

I invite all questions that a responsible breeder should be asked, and you can expect an in-depth interview from me in return.

An hour is a reasonable amount of time for an initial conversation with an earnest inquirer.

Please expect several hours of dialogue, either via phone, video conference, or in person, before we know whether we're a good fit as a breeder and potential puppy owner.

After an initial phone conversation, local families will be encouraged to visit in person.

Site visits, either in-person or via video conference, are preferred.

Approved potential puppy owners who want to continue the process will be asked to complete a Deposit Agreement after the puppies are born.

Zolani RR puppies are sold under a Purchase Contract, including a return to the breeder if the owner cannot keep the dog, per RRCUS and CRRC Code of Ethics.
